PHILHARMONIC Choir Mark 12 Months Of Success Under New Conductor

GREENOCK Philharmonic Choir have celebrated the first anniversary of the appointment of Andy McTaggart as conductor and musical director.

After the departure of Alejandro De Palma Garrido, Andrew took over in September 2017 and the choir has had a great year. Highlights have been a Christmas and spring concerts and two come-and-sing events.

The 50-strong group has taken Andrew to their hearts and have flourished under his directorship with his unique blend of musical and vocal expertise, enthusiasm, thoroughness and humour. A spokesman for the choir’s committee said: “Andy was already an old acquaintance of the Philharmonic, having been a soloist in our performance of Rossini's Messa Di Gloria in 2012.

"He has a very informal style, and believes that rehearsals should be fun, while having a clear idea in his mind of what he is aiming for.”

Andy, who graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2012, said: “We have had a great year and the choir are enthusiastically moving forward as we rehearse every Monday night -- the wonderful feeling of accomplishment and joy as a team you are part of gets better.

"Numbers are on the up and friends who were watching our performance of Howard Goodall’s Eternal Light were deeply moved by the commitment of the choir putting heart and soul going into the music and the performance."

To celebrate his first year, Andy was presented with a special cake with his photo on it, which was shared at the tea break during the rehearsal.

The music will be a seasonal selection, including ‘O Magnum Mysterium’ (Morten Lauridsen), In Winter (Victor Johnson), Fantasia on Christmas Carols (Vaughan Williams), Scots Nativity (Alan Bullard) and some music by Bach.

The choir is also running an informal social evening on Saturday 27 October, also in the Lyle Kirk Union Street building. This will feature music by Andy McTaggart and some of his friends. Tickets are priced £8 and are available through choir members or by contacting 07847 250529.
